@mitchofarrell swept an encampment less than a wee @mitchofarrell swept an encampment less than a week after they survived a car crashing into their encampment. The City is installing a traffic signal near the encampment, but instead of communicating with the residents in a trauma-informed way, Mitch brought a large crew of Sanitation workers and LAPD to force them to pack up all of their things and move. After working under the hot sun to move their things, the city crew left without cleaning the sidewalks and without offering services or housing. The residents said that they had to clean up debris from the car crash and when we left, they were sweeping up the sidewalk with their own brooms. There is no housing or shelter available, and while Mitch O’Farrell sends his team of Urban Alchemy outreach workers to pass out sandwiches, it’s mutual aid volunteers who are working to provide them with substantial aid.

Creating a patchwork of unmarked banishment zones won't do anything to solve homelessness, but it will ensure cruel and arbitrary enforcement against unhoused people. Tell your councilmember you oppose this measure, and come to city hall tomorrow (details in thread).

BREAKING: Tomorrow, LA City Council will be voting to expand 41.18, however, no one on council or at the city has been able to articulate how much of LA would be affected by the amendment. So we mapped it for them. A low estimate adds 2400 sites and 46 banished sq miles.

Safe consumption sites save lives. This legislation paves the way for LA to invest in harm reduction instead of criminalization. We still need to push local officials to make this a reality.

Senator Scott Wiener@Scott_Wiener

BREAKING: Assembly just passed our legislation (SB 57) authorizing safe consumption sites in SF, LA & Oakland! Senate passed this bill last year.

People are dying of overdoses on our streets. Safe consumption sites are a proven strategy to save lives & get people into treatment.

One year ago, City Council passed the current 41.18 ordinance—after weeks of backdoor meetings with billionaires and avoiding public input. We rallied on city hall steps. On Friday they are voting on an amendment that would massively expand it. We need you to come to city hall.
