Defund the Police: Rally for Black Unhoused Lives

June 13, 2020 @ 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm

[ESPAÑOL ABAJO]

Join us for a rally for Black, unhoused lives and the fight to DEFUND THE POLICE!

We know a disproportionate number of Black lives are vulnerable to housing insecurity and homelessness, making up 34 percent of LA’s homeless population, but only 8 percent of the general population. Meanwhile, unhoused individuals are met with constant harassment and frequent violence at the hands of the police, rather than the services and housing they need.

As agents of the racist carceral state, police officers approach people living on the street — especially Black unhoused people — as suspects to be interrogated, surveilled, and punished. Many people suffer from substance abuse and mental health issues as a result of being unhoused, and the antagonistic approach of the police frequently escalates into violent confrontations — including the 2015 police shooting and killing of a Black Skid Row resident Charley Africa. SAY HIS NAME!

This is sadly unsurprising when the highest percentage of our city budget is given to law enforcement that exists primarily to protect capital, and police Black and poor people. We demand Los Angeles #DefundThePolice and pass a #PeoplesBudgetLA to fund #HouseKeysNotHandcuffs and #ServicesNotSweeps!

Please message DSA-LA or Street Watch LA (or email us at streetwatch@dsa-la.org) if your organization would like to sign on or if you’d like to donate supplies. We welcome all legal observers and medical personnel.

**Please be mindful of our unhoused neighbors living in the park and do not disturb their space! We also ask that everyone wear a mask and practice physical distancing during the event. We want to minimize the spread of COVID-19, which has disproportionately affected communities of color.**

#BlackLivesMatter
